In every home I design, I include multiple spaces for the homeowners to take a pause, read, and relax from the stress of their fast-paced lives. These spaces can be built-in benches such as the one above, or dedicated chairs for reading placed in a bedroom, office, sunroom, library, or family room.
These spaces are always comfortable and inviting with the inclusion of pillows and a blanket. Oftentimes, a low-profile reading lamp is included to project light onto the reading material regardless of the amount of natural light.
A dedicated reading nook creates a sanctuary for the homeowner’s brain to take a pause, relax, and focus on reading. We spend so much time attached to our electronic devices that it is healthy to give our brain a break from the screens and focus on a book, magazine, or newspaper….yes some people even subscribe to those!
Over time, your body will learn that sitting in the reading nook indicates relaxation is coming, and you will notice your body start to relax before reading even begins. Your family members will also quickly learn that when you are sitting in your reading nook space, you are not to be disturbed. It is the invisible “do not disturb” sign that you create around yourself while in your reading sanctuary.
So how can you give yourself the gift of a reading sanctuary in your home? Share details of your reading nook in the comments below.
