When I talk with new clients about designing their homes, I always talk to them about how their homes make them feel. Do certain spaces make them feel stressed or anxious? Do patterns excite them or make them unsettled? What colors calm them, warm rich colors or bright clean colors?
When talking about primary bedrooms, I ask my client’s what do they first experience when they wake up? What do their eyes see and what are the experiences of their senses? What is the first thing their feet touch; something warm and soft or cold and hard?
This is when we start to talk about how the design of their bedroom can help with their overall wellness. The first few minutes of the day can set the mood for the entire day. If they wake up and first see a pile of laundry, we want to change that!
When designing a primary bedroom, I will consider many things that can help achieve a positive start to the day. Those include:
-
artwork on the walls – something that brings joy and positive emotions
-
the ceiling – wallpaper or a paint color makes looking at the ceiling when in bed a wake up to the senses
-
the flooring – soft rugs under the bed make your first sensory experience out of bed one of comfort
-
bathroom flooring – adding in heated floors for those living in colder climates
-
bathroom lighting – everything should be on a dimmer, so your eyes gradually adjust to the morning
-
flowers and plants – adding live plants is not only good for the air in the room, but it brings nature inside, bringing a sense of calm you probably haven’t thought about
Interior Design is not only about creating beautiful spaces but about creating spaces that can improve your lifestyle and overall sense of wellness!
