Design Tip ~ Glass Tabletops

Design Tip

Make a room feel open and light with a glass-top coffee table

I love to add glass-topped coffee tables to a room, especially when I want the space to feel open and airy. Using a glass top allows a coffee table to appear less bulky. It is a great design feature when the table is large such as the one in the above picture. These nesting tables are over 5 feet around, so if they were solid wood, they would overpower the room. These custom tables have a thick wood edge so the homeowners can put their feet on the tables without touching the glass. That is the fun of making custom tables…..you make them however you want!

I also like to include glass tabletops when the table bases make a statement. The table below has a base that is a piece of artwork all by itself! The glass top allows you to see the beauty in the base. Plus for this table, I love the darker glass which adds a smokey shine in front of the beautiful stone fireplace.

When a room has a rug with an impactful design, that is another reason to go with a glass-topped coffee table. Animal print going wild below!

Another benefit in adding a glass table top is that it represents the element of water in Feng Shui. Sometimes it is not possible to add actual water into a room design, so adding a large piece of glass can accomplish the element balance we strive for in a Feng Shui designed room.

I encourage my clients to always include multiple material elements within a space: wood, glass, metal and upholstered pieces. Within my own home, my living room has side tables with glass tops and shelves, my coffee tables are metal and reclaimed wood, and I have a small marble topped table as well.

I challenge you to think about your rooms and where might you add a glass topped coffee or side table?

Happy designing and Welcome to our House!
